Sydney To-Do List & OOTDs

Hard Rock Cafe Merchandise Store - Checked. Not worth my taxi fare of AUD$45 from Manly to Harbourside Centre though. The merchandise store is small with very little stock. There's no sweater or jackets. Only T-shirts, caps, pins & a few other stuff. I did'nt have anything particular to buy but did'nt want to leave without buying anything so I bought a HRC Cap which cost AUD$28.

Pandora Sydney Opera House - Checked. Would love to have a Sydney Harbour Bridge Charm but they did'nt have it. There's Koala & Kangaroo charm too which I did'nt get coz I did'nt see any Koala or Kangaroo on this trip. The Sydney Opera House Charm costs AUD$49.

A visit to a client's office, Fox Sports Sydney - Checked. Wonderful people they have there!
A drive through the Sydney Bridge - Checked

Trip : Part 2 (Hotel)

I have never been to Sydney or any part of Australia. So having to go to Sydney for a week on business, was actually something I looked forward to...

The weather was perfect. It rained on the first day I was there but otherwise sunny & blue skies greeted me every other day with cold winds....ahhhh pleasant

So I stayed at The Quest in Manly. I would not classified it as a hotel but more of a serviced apartment. Suitable for families too.

I have nothing bad to say about this place. They clean & made my bed everyday. Replenish my hot choco & biscuits. Service is a definite 2 thumbs up. Wi-Fi is a breeze. The hotel staff are friendly too.

I got the room facing the Manly Wharf. More info on The Quest here

Published rates is at AUD$325/room night for twin sharing.

Trip : Part 1 (Flight)

Most of the time I heard stories from others of how crappy a place their company made them put up at, when they were sent overseas for business. In order to save cost, especially when one company is on a tight budget, flight & hotel are often compromise.

Being newly employed & having to travel alone I of course have my doubts & reservations. However having said that, when your company have very little turnover, co-workers seem to work happily together & travelling takes up almost 60% of your work, it can't be that bad right so it's best to just put on a positive note & make the best out of your travel...

I flew SQ (Singapore Airlines) both ways & it's gonna be SQ for all my trips overseas in the near future. I don't remember when was the last time I flew with them, reason being it's generally more expensive so for personal trips I would have settled for an average priced ticket from some other known carriers like Emirates, Thai or even Jetstar. So tell me what is the reason of it being expensive compared to others again other than being voted the best airline by some travel magazine or paid auditing firm???...

I can even list out the things that can be improved upon & my bad experiences...I used to think they are the perfect airline with the perfect steward & stewardess, you know they always say they have the 'X' factor, & all those promises about going above & beyond on customer service...haha oh well not anymore..

I requested Muslim Meal both ways. The food that was served to me was definitely dissappointing both ways. I end up hungry throughout the 7-8hr flight as I could'nt finish my meal & when I glanced over there was my neighbour enjoying his....*sigh*

So this meal thingy, it bugs me...while normal economy class passenger gets to choose their meals why can't we with special meals choose ours??....Having work in an airline industry before as a Ground Rep & Flight Attendant, I'm sure this is definitely a workable solution...

If airlines are afraid of wastage on special meals they can maybe allow their passengers to choose their meals prior to boarding the flight like online or via sms within 24hrs. Meals are only boarded a few hours before flight anyway.

So during my return flight home...I was served an indian dish which consist of rice, chicken tandoori I think, potato curry & a dessert. Meal was ok but I did'nt even touch the dessert just coz it's way too sweet for my liking. You know those Indian dessert which is soaked in sugar syrup, only a true Indian would be able to eat that & I'm not one of them...

While I wait for someone to clear my tray, a steward goes around offering ice-cream...He skipped me & asked my neighbour instead if he wants an ice-cream...I then realise that the normal meal passengers do not have dessert in their set so the ice-cream is actually their dessert...I know that & I understand that the crew needs to finish their service first to ensure that all normal meal passengers get their ice-cream before they give the ice-cream to special meal passengers like me. But what I'm upset about is the reply the steward gave me when I asked for one " Sorry ma'am, this ice-cream is for normal meal passengers only, as your meal already have a dessert "....he pointed at the dessert which clearly have'nt been touched by me

Well he is not rude or anything but isn't there a nicer way to say it like " I'm sorry maa'am, the ice-cream is for normal meal passengers only but if you like one, maybe let me finish my service & if there's any extras I would be glad to give one to you "....

Like a small lil girl, not getting an ice-cream really made me feel like crying...haha

The rest of my journey home was OK...I slept, I watch movies, walk-around the exact same thing like any other passenger on a boring oopss boeing 777 flight.... till part 2

Sydney Food

Being a foodie, I have done enough research before my Sydney trip on Halal places to eat. Unfortunately due to time constraint I was'nt able to go to most or shall I say any of those places...oh well there's always next time I guess...

For most of my dinner I settle on just Kebabs & Nando's as it's just walking distance from where I was staying...Nando's in Sydney have always been certified Halal. However recently they have just introduce selling alcohol in their premises which might be an issue to Muslims consuming their food there. I bought mine for take-away & don't find any issue with it as I was re-assured by the staff working there who is a Muslim himself & he having showed me the Halal chicken packaging Nando's chicken came in...

I would say on average my meal would cost me between AUD$12-AUD$15..Meal includes a drink & 1 side probably rice or chips..satisfy me enough Alhamdullilah

For the benefit of my Muslim readers who will be visiting Sydney below are some Halal eateries you might want to visit. I have shortlist them based on reviews & of course if they are still open for business...you might not want to go all the way there & find the restaurant already closed down do you...

Vivid Sydney

I was actually lucky to have been in Sydney during the Vivid Sydney Festival. Although I would have prefered to catch the view of the Opera House & the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the day, there's definitely no way I could do that given that I've only got a week & being in the Sydney office 9-5 Mon-Fri would made it impossible for me to sight-see...

So I updated my Sydney's to-do list...Strike off 'To take picture of the Opera House & Sydney Harbour Bridge at the Royal Botanical Gardens' & checked 'Take Ferry to see the Opera House & Sydney Harbour Bridge Vivid Light-Up'...hah

Conveniently enough Manly Wharf is located just opposite The Quest, where I was staying. The ferry ride cost AUD$14.40 2-way & AUD$7.20 1-way from Manly to Circular Quay...Ferry runs every 30mins from Manly Wharf i.e 6.15, 6.45, 7.15, 7.45 intervals...

This is me...probably the only picture taken by someone else on my good ol' Iphone4...only because the ferry crew offered after seeing me painstakingly self-taking multiple shots of the ferry entrance with me in it...lol
The ferry ride was pleasant. Given that the same ferry is used by the locals to commute to & from Sydney city everyday, the ferry company definitely did an awesome job in maintaining it's cleanliness & interior tidy....I chose the outdoor seating at the upper deck, nevermind that it's freezing cold (about 12C) & slightly drizzling, there's no way I'm going to take the ferry & not get the full experience of it...
I'm not sure how the Sydney Harbour Bridge & the Opera House look like on any other night without the 'Vivid' light-ups. Probably pitch dark? No? Anyway I sure am lucky to be in Sydney the very week this is going on...Below are some pictures taken on my iphone

vs pictures taken by others on the official 'Vivid Sydney' webpage

as you can see my iphone definitely did not do any justice to the spectacular light effects of 'Vivid'...
you can view more pictures here
Vivid Sydney is a yearly event. This year running from 24th May to 10th June 2013.

Makcik MakChiC

I guess every blog requires an introduction post...

So this is mine...My very first 'virgin' post on this humble blog...

I'm just a typical next door 'makcik'....well not literally as I am still 'Chic' hah. On the account of my international readers 'Makcik' in the Malay language is what you use to address your Aunt or any lady which is older than you are...oh well I'm not that old or this blog would be 'When the 'Nenek' talks'...'Nenek' is of course the common generic term for 'Grandmother'...ok enough of the Malay kinship terminology translation for now...

So this blog of mine it's gonna be an avenue for me to write on my experiences...successful cooks & bakes together with its recipes...travel & food reviews....maybe more if & when time permits...

'MakChiC' is a very busy lady...with 4 boys, maybe 5 if counting the husband, a full-time job, 24hours a day juggling both career & home is never enough...

So I hope you'll learn more about me with every post I put up well for whatever reason you don't I still hope you get the information you are searching for which brings you here in the first place...
